How to Place a Special Order

Prior to each delivery, everyone on our e-list receives a newsletter that lists special order items. If you would like to be placed on the e-list, just fill out the newsletter sign-up form.

To place a special order: Call or email the office by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday for Wednesday groups, Monday for Thursday groups, or Tuesday for Saturday groups. Tell us each item you are ordering (please be specific) and what it costs. Also tell us whose group you are in, so we know where to send the order.

Payment: You may now pay for your special order by CREDIT CARD! We need your name, address, zip, phone, and the credit card type, number, expiration date, and CVC code. Alternatively, you may pay by giving your coordinator a check payable to Purple Dragon before the delivery. Write the items and your group name on the check and "For Deposit Only" on the back. Or mail it to us: 289 Washington Street, Glen Ridge, NJ 07028; write "For Deposit Only" on the back. Also write “Special Order” and your pickup day and coordinator’s name on the envelope.

Fees: Late special orders will be charged a $5 late order fee IF we are able to fill them. We also charge $5 to cancel any special order once items have been entered in the computer or ordered from a supplier.

Missing special order items: If you can not find all or part of your special order when you go to pick up, please let us know right away and before 5 pm on the delivery day. That way, we can help you to locate it. If an order was sent and you don’t let us know by 5 pm that you can't find it, we may have to ask you to pay for it anyway, as it may become irretrievably lost or spoiled, and the co-op cannot afford to pay for things that have gone missing too far back for us to find out what happened to them.

Taking Care of Your Fruits and Veggies

In extreme weather, please pick up early or drop off an ice chest with your name on it and a note to the dividers to pack your veggies in the ice chest. This will protect produce from wilting due to moisture loss in hot weather or freezing during cold weather.

Be sure to refrigerate raspberries and strawberries immediately; do not let them get warm in your car or kitchen. The Green bags we sell are excellent for keeping strawberries, etc. from molding.

How to resuscitate droopy greens: Cut off the bottoms and place in cool water for 15 minutes. Drain thoroughly, wrap in toweling, and put in the fridge in an open plastic bag.

Please call or email if you have any questions about protecting your fruits and veggies.

What To Do When You Go On Vacation

If you are going out of town, you must find someone to take your share that week and give your coordinator the name and phone number of the person who is picking up. If you fail to do this, we may have to cancel delivery to an entire group, which is not fair to the other members.

If you can't find a friend to take your food, perhaps there is someone to whom you owe a favor or to whom would like to give a gift; or you can donate your food to a shelter (if they will pick it up) or to the entire group. Giving away one share translates to less than $1/week over the entire year, so please do this if you can't find a sub ... and know that you are helping others.

Members, you have been great about finding subs for yourselves! Thank you all very much, as this saves wear and tear on the office and our dear coordinators! Also, often subs are interested in joining the co-op or subbing in the future, so it strengthens Purple Dragon overall, allowing us to have continued strong buying power and good stability.

Earning and Using Referral Credits

Some pods need members to fill up. If you have friends who might be interested in our Co-op, please give us their names, addresses, and phone numbers, and we will mail them our information. There is a $20 bonus for you if your friend joins (after 3 months), and another $20 for both you and your friend after they have been in for 6 months.

Referral credits are good on special order grocery items, such as dried fruits and nuts, peanut butter, oils, pasta, Blue Earth local organic ketchup and other BE products, and NJ honeys. When you claim a credit, please tell us whose group you are in, whose group the person you referred to us is in, and when that person joined. Both of you need to be currently active in the Co-op and without any outstanding debts for you to claim your referral credits. Spend each $20 credit all at once, as it is too time-consuming for us to track partial usages. Thank you for your referrals -- they keep our Co-op strong!

If Your Coordinator Retires

If your coordinator retires, every effort will be made to find a new coordinator and to keep the group going at the same or a nearby location. If you are interested in taking over as coordinator, please let us know. (See next section.)

Becoming a Coordinator

Good coordinators are crucial to our Co-op. If you are interested in becoming a coordinator of a new or existing group, please contact our office. You can be both a site host and an administrator for a $40 discount per delivery; or you can share the job with another member, and you will each receive a $20 discount per delivery. Please see the Home page for a list of cities where we currently need coordinators.
